What contracts should West Brom be extending?

West Bromwich Albion have 7 senior players out of contract in the summer of 2025. I’m answering who I think the Baggies should be offering new deals to before it’s too late.

Grady Diangana

Grady Diangana signed for West Bromwich Albion permanently from West Ham in the summer of 2020 after a successful loan spell at the club, in which they won promotion to the Premier League.

It did then take a few seasons for the natural winger to hit the ground running again at The Hawthorns, but Carlos Corberán worked his magic with Diangana unlocking his potential, making him a key player in the 2023/24 season.

The 26-year-old netted 7 goals and assisted 8 times, and found himself playing more of a central role for the Baggies.

The Congo international has had a rough start to this season’s campaign being plagued with injuries, but West Brom should definitely look at extending his stay in B71.

Grady offers plenty of attacking depth, is a great Championship player and is a fan favourite at Albion, it makes sense for both parties.

Kyle Bartley

Kyle Bartley is a veteran at West Brom. The 33-year-old has entered his 7th season at The Hawthorns and has been fairly essential in recent years, playing a big role in Albion’s playoff campaign last season.

The defender can automatically have his contract extended a further 12 months by an appearance-related clause in his contract, which he seems likely to achieve as he has started all 8 games in the Championship so far this season.

If somehow Bartley doesn’t reach the necessary appearances, it’s probably best for both parties to end the relationship between the two.

Ted Cann

Ted Cann is a 23-year-old goalkeeper who came through the Albion academy, but is yet to have made a single senior appearance for the club.

Cann is an emergency player for if both Alex Palmer and Joe Wildsmith are unavailable, and it’s hard to imagine the Throstles see any value in tying him down to another contract.

It’s a fair opinion to say Cann should be let go at the end of this season.

Jayson Molumby

Jayson Molumby has hit the ground running at West Bromwich Albion this season, being a marquee player for them and the fans are loving it.

The 25-year-old midfielder had his season cut short in January last season due to injury, but has been remarkable for the Baggies since his return.

The Irish international scored the winning goal against Swansea earlier this season during an excellent piece of football with Josh Maja.

Molumby is another one of the players that Carlos Corberán has managed to bring the best out of, and is definitely worth keeping at the club for an extended amount of time.

Darnell Furlong

Arriving to the Baggies in 2019, Darnell Furlong has been Albion’s starting right-back for 6 seasons now.

Furlong hasn’t always been a popular character amongst fans at Albion, but Carlos Corberán again transformed another player and shaped him into the perfect player to fit his system.

The 28-year-old scored 5 goals and assisted 3 in an enjoyable 2023/24 campaign, and with some very memorable defensive efforts, Furlong earned the respect of many fans at The Hawthorns, and therefore deserves a new deal to extend his stay.

John Swift

John Swift arrived to B71 as a free agent in 2022 after spending 6 seasons with Reading.

The Chelsea academy graduate had a fantastic debut season with the Baggies, but hasn’t managed to find that form since.

Despite scoring 9 goals last season, Albion fans have become rather frustrated with John Swift, and it’s clear Carlos Corberán fancies Grady Diangana over him.

There’s no doubt Swift is a great Championship player, but his time at West Brom should probably end next summer.

Semi Ajayi

Ajayi is the final senior player out of contract in 2025.

The Nigerian international has been Cédric Kipré’s direct replacement for the Baggies this season, finding his place in the starting 11 once again.

While Ajayi does lack on the ball ability, something West Brom need, Ajayi’s sheer pace, strength and defensive ability is absolutely worth keeping.

Ajayi is approaching 31 years of age, so if Albion do want to continue lowering the average squad age, it makes sense to let him go.

However, as a squad player, he is definitely worth keeping in my opinion.

Conclusion

Albion have reasons to keep every player listed, but in my opinion only 4 of the 7 are worth keeping.

The Baggies have adopted a new strategy when it comes to managing their squad, so it will be interesting to see who they do offer contracts this season.
